Trimming your trees is one of the countless outdoor responsibilities of homeowners. There are many reasons why you should prune your trees and all of them contribute to the safety and aesthetics of your yard.
But how do you know when it’s time to prune? Most trees can
be trimmed throughout the year, with the exception of the extreme heat or
extreme cold. But if your trees exhibit any of these signs, it may be time to
get out the trimmers:
- The tree is overgrown. Overgrown trees may sneak up on you over time, slowly growing closer to your house or driveway. Getting control of overgrown trees is important so they don’t cause damage to your cars or siding.
- Broken branches. Broken branches are very common, especially when they are subject to strong winds or heavy snow. Branches that are partially broken or dangling pose a safety threat to the people and landscaping below.
- Visual obstruction. Trees that need to be trimmed gradually obscure your view from your home or driveway. You’ll need good clearance to see when backing out of your driveway, and you don’t want your overgrown trees to give a burglar a safe place to hide.
- Fallen branches on power lines. Branches that have fallen on power lines can be extremely dangerous. Be sure to call a professional to have those limbs removed.
- Dead or diseased branches. Branches with no leaves or that are infested with insects should be removed. This may help contain the spread of disease and keep the rest of your tree looking healthy.
Trimming your trees regularly helps to maintain the their
natural form, and keeps your yard looking neat and attractive for years to
come.
